Fritz Gallery is pleased to present Island to Island, an exhibition featuring the photography of Nathan Coe. Nathan Coe is an internationally collected photographer; his work has been featured in Vogue Magazine, Town & Country, Billboard, and more. He ran and photographed Nantucket Magazine for two and a half years and has been represented at Cavalier Galleries in Greenwich, New York and Nantucket, Massachusetts. Most recently, Coe published a collection of his work in a limited-edition book entitled, Nantucket (2017). Ted Bell, former Creative Director at Young & Rubicam and New York Times bestselling writer, said of the collection: “Like no one before, or after him, Nathan has managed to create a body of work that embodies and embraces one of the most majestically and surreally beautiful places on the planet.”

Nathan Coe draws his influence from various sources, from the high fashion of Jeanloup Sieff to the surrealism of Man Ray. By taking photographs of landscapes from Nantucket and Palm Beach and re-contextualizing them as sites of desire and fantasy, this collection of work relies on the femininity of the body. Delicate curves, long slender bodies, and elegant postures are transposed on top of the organic landscape. Through the use of double exposures and other photographic processes, he brings a contemporary edge to the natural beauty of the classical nude. The images are a mix of landscapes and nudes, in both color and monochrome; deserted beaches, grassy dunes, and tropical paradises are depicted with the respect and affection that Coe feels for the landscape.

The opening reception will take place on Friday, January 11, 2019, from 6-9pm. The Fritz Gallery is located at 211 Royal Poinciana Way, Palm Beach, FL. The gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 11am-5pm, and Sunday and Monday by appointment only. For more information, or to RSVP, please email info@fritzgallery.com, or call (561) 223-2498.

NATHAN COE, inspired by classical analog techniques and contemporary fashion, utilizes double exposures to create surrealistic imagery inspired by site specific landscapes and sensualism. Seeing for the first time the femininity in the coastlines of Nantucket, Coe began to overlay contrasting photos of the female form over the landscape to create ethereal images. Coe shoots the two images precisely using medium format Hasselblad and Phase One cameras, and then overlays them without cropping or manipulating, except with dodging and burning the exposures. Using rich contrasts and dramatic lighting, Coe’s work invites the viewer into the landscape of these three locations: Nantucket, New York, and South Florida. But his work suggests that the landscape is more than just a place: it is dream-like site of sensual projection. Coe was born in Leeds, England in 1979, and spent the majority of his life in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Coe currently resides in Palm Beach, FL.
