Chinese, born 1968

Canal Cheong Jagerroos (張 彤 茹) b.1968, is a Chinese contemporary visual artist who grew up in an artistic family in Macau. Canal live and work between Helsinki, Shanghai, Nice, Berlin and Tokyo.

In the past 30 years, Canal has lived and worked in numerous countries from Asia to Europe and Africa. The unique experience of having lived in such culturally diverse places, namely; Hong Kong, Shanghai, France, Switzerland, Italy, Senegal and Finland has influenced her work greatly whether consciously or subconsciously. Canal has discovered that walking the line between the east and west, facing different cultures, can be both constructive and destructive, but always inspirational.

Canal is an artist who expresses much cultural reflection in her works. She is well versed in the context of both Eastern and Western art, and via artistic experiments, she has opened up a dialogue between different cultures, and from this dialogue, created a futuristic language of her own. Using Modernist colors, she deconstructs signs and symbols of traditional Chinese art, breaking down the language barrier between the abstract and the concrete. Her pieces simultaneously contain the elegance of Chinese ink paintings, and the strength of Western prints. This shows the artist’s attitude of freedom and individuality, amidst a variety of tensions, her own liberation and cosmopolitan spirit is highlighted.

Canal Cheong Jagerroos is the Founder of ‘Floating Island’ Art project 2018 – 2023 and the Co-Founder of the Art Project ‘Blue and Red’ which will be showing in numerous museums in China and Finland from 2018 - 2020.
